An Online Book Discussion Group on Climate Change for Student Engagement

Activity: Talk or presentation typesConference contribution (without a publication)Academic

Description

In this study, we organized an extra-curricular book discussion group specially for distance-learning students of the environmental sciences bachelor and master program. In several online classes we discussed current novels on climate change and one classic non-fiction book on the impact of the use of agricultural poison on environment and human society. At the end, students contributed to an online survey that includes a reflection. Through this survey, we analyzed the impact the reading and discussing of the books had on the students views on climate change, their relationship with their environment and how the book discussion group influenced their engagement with climate change as well as with their study program. We present empirical data on the book discussion group as a didactic tool in higher distance education on climate change.
