Description

A webinar for the student association NouW

Research on micro- and nanoplastics
Dear members of NouW and interested people. In these weird times with corona, it is not easy to plan live NouW meetings . Therefore, we will present our first NouWEBinar on September 4th. Online meetings have the advantage that you don’t have to travel and we have the possibility to invite a wider audience. The session will start with Frank van Belleghem from Hasselt in Belgium, followed by Inneke Hantoro from Semarang in Indonesia.

Frank van Belleghem will give an introductory lecture on the occurrence of micro- and nanoplastics in the environment and the possible health effects. Frank will explain how he organises the research of the microplastics based on the ZonMw research, this will include the synthesis of microplastics, the characterisation of the microplastics, the exposure experiments, the detection of the plastics in the cells, and the measurement of toxicity. It will be a theoretical webinar, comprehensible for a non-expert audience.

Inneke Hantoro will devote her lecture to her OU/Unika PhD-research in Semarang/UHasselt, it will be a more or less applied interpretation of Frank’s talk. It will include the detection of microplastics in commercial seafood; the uptake, translocation and toxicity of microplastics in human gut cells (preliminary result); seafood consumption and exposure assessment of microplastic intake by using Semarang as a case study.
