Description
At the Fillip Maker Meetup 1.0 Serendipity (Arnhem, the Netherlands), we present our project on serendipity in music (see also Wopereis & Braam, 2018). The presentation is subdivided into three parts. In the first part, we discuss the concept of serendipity. Michiel plays excerpts of songs that refer to striking examples of serendipity (e.g., the pill). These songs belong to his musical program Serendipities (Bik Bent Braam, 2010). Definitions and examples are commented upon. The second part of the presentation consists of two musical experiments with the audience. The first experiment explores affordances for serendipity in musical improvisation; the second one examines the effect of musical and physical constraints on improvisational processes and serendipitous musical output. The audience is asked to provide input for both experiments, that is, information for two musical improvisations played by Michiel. In the third part of the presentation, we discuss the relationship between serendipity, improvisation, and creativity.
