Within the boundaries of medieval north Italian city states, citizens had a certainty that legal documents and legal acts would be resolved according to local city law. A citizen had the certainty that a will or an intestate succession would follow the local statute, legal certainty was attached to the status of citizen, and valid within the city boundary, but to what extent was this law valid outside of the city?
