Description

This roundtable reflects on both the history and future of TMG Journal for Media History by showcasing a range of methodological approaches in doing media history. Each panelist will present a specific approach or methodology related to their current research – such as a transmedial approach, web-based ethnography, (experimental) media archaeology, or digital humanities – and link this to one or more special issues from the journal. In doing so, the panel aims to collectively explore possible directions for the field of media history and media studies more broadly. At the same time, it highlights the journal’s role as a platform for methodological diversity and encourages the audience to contribute – whether through article submissions or special issue proposals. These reflections take place against the backdrop of a broader disciplinary shift in media history and media studies: the increasing digitization of sources and tools, the growing interdisciplinarity of the field, and the call for more explicit methodological frameworks. This roundtable appears particularly fitting for the first Netherlands Media Studies Conference, given the journal’s Dutch origins, even as it has grown into an internationally oriented publication.
