Description
Panel discussion moderated by Jeroen Vervliet (Director of the Montesquieu Institute). The participants were Sanne van Oers (Netherlands Bar Association), Nathalie Schnabl (Open Universiteit), Jonathan Soeharno (lawyer and professor University of Amsterdam), Teun Struycken (Former State Secretary for Legal Protection), and Rick Lawson (Chair of the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights). The discussion focused mainly on the state of legal aid in the Netherlands and the role of the government. It was evident that legal aid and social advocacy are in decline, but the question was how this can be addressed. It was clear that the panelists spoke from different perspectives. They represented, among others, academia, the legal profession, and central government. As a result, they also had differing views on the possible solutions to the problems facing legal aid in the Netherlands.
