In view of rapidly changing global dynamics, education systems need to better promote the acquisition of 21st century competencies, such as communication, critical thinking, teamwork and collaborative problem solving. In many countries, they are explicitly included as important aspects of education policies as well as learning objectives of curriculum frameworks. Critical shortcomings, however, remain with regard to the teaching and assessment of these competencies through effective pedagogies and assessment frameworks that take into account a broader range of skills and competencies, including those in social and emotional domains that are more difficult to measure through traditional examinations and tests. This workshop aims to share ideas, experiences and perspectives on the teaching and assessment of ‘21st century’ competencies, which will provide inputs to the debate on teaching and assessing 21st century skills and competencies, especially in the context of the post-2015 education and development agenda.
