Research interests

Denis Abels is a full professor of criminal law and head of the department of public law. Before, he was a full time judge at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal.

His fields of expertise are (substantive) criminal law and (international) prison law. His research interests include areas as organised crime, environmental crime, corruption and sentencing. 

Abels defended his PhD thesis 'Prisoners of the international community' (cum laude) in 2012 at the University of Amsterdam.

 

Abels is a honorary judge at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal.

He is also a member of the editorial board of the Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Strafrecht.
