Research interests

Denis Abels is a full professor of criminal law and dean of the faculty of law at the Open Universiteit

Before, he was a full time justice at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal and  a professor of criminal law (sentencing and enforcement) at the University of Amsterdam.

His fields of expertise are (substantive) criminal law and (international) sentencing and prison law. His research interests include areas as organised crime, environmental crime, sentencing and enforcement. 

Abels defended his PhD thesis 'Prisoners of the international community' (cum laude) in 2012 at the University of Amsterdam.

 

Abels is a honorary justice at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal.

He is a member of the editorial board of the journal 'Sancties. Tijdschrift over straffen en maatregelen' (Kluwer publishers). He is also an author in the edited volumes of 'Tekst & Commentaar Wetboek van Strafrecht (Kluwer)'.
