Abstract
The most vulnerable group in the Dutch pension system are workers of lower education with physically demanding jobs. This study examines which job resources affect the ability of workers to continue working based on data from 306 lower educated respondents from the logistical sector in Limburg, Netherlands. Following assumptions in the job demands-resources model, we have hypothesized that the relevant job resources are the following: social support from colleagues, learning opportunities, servant leadership and job autonomy. These resources are assumed to be mediated by the level of work engagement. Mediation and regression analysis have confirmed the relation between the relevant job resources and the ability to continue working. The relevant job resources themselves do not have a direct relation with the ability to continue working; the relation is completely mediated by the level of work engagement. Social support is found to be the most important predictor to work engagement and therefore to the ability of workers to continue working.
