Abstract
In legal science, Darwinian evolution has been tried out as an explanatory model for decades, but has not become mainstream. Its usefulness and its limits become clear in the studies discussed in this review article. It is shown that Darwinism offers conceptual tools for the explanation on a larger scale, such as witch trials and the development of pledges and mortgages, as well as on a smaller scale of the unit of selection in the spread of legal forms.
