Abstract
Sustainable labor participation has become a topic of concern over the past few years. Demographic and labor market trends emphasize the importance of employable, healthy, and motivated employees who are able and willing to participate in the labor market until the official (and sustained) retirement age. In this article, we discuss the content and meaning of sustainable labor participation and the attention this topic has received in research and practice. First, we emphasize the necessity of sustainable labor participation and discuss several aspects of this construct. Next, we ask ourselves: what is an older worker? Then, we present several lines of research focusing on older workers and sustainable labor participation. Finally, we pay attention to interventions that can be applied to protect and enhance employees' sustainable labor participation.
