Abstract
The history of how Dutch relations of people with severe mental health issues organised from the 1960s onwards. Initially protesting against malpractices and circumstances that were harmful to their loved ones first, and to themselves only second, by the 1980s the awareness arose that the interests of psychiatric patients and those close to them were not always the same. In response to developments that increasingly marginalised close relations, even though they were expected to shoulder the bulk of care, from 1980 onwards, these relations established their own activist organisations, empowering themselves and demanding their voices to be heard.
