Abstract

The past two decades of research on faultlines have significantly enhanced our understanding of how diversity affects team dynamics. While much of the research highlights the detrimental effects of faultline divides, strategies for managing their influence remain underexplored. This symposium delves into potential boundary conditions that moderate the impact of faultlines across various levels. We begin with Chung and Su examining subgroup power and faultline strength as moderators for the relationship between individual power and outcomes. The second presentation by Yang and colleagues focuses on humor use as a way to mitigate the negative impact of cultural faultlines. Next, Seong, Zhang, and Hong investigate the effects of collective personality and ability fit as conditions affecting the categorization and elaboration processes triggered by different types of faultlines. Following this, Shin, You, and Chung look at how the effect of demographic minority directors on firm performance is influenced by their isolation in the boardroom. The last presentation by Vandebeek, Kelleci, and Voordeckers explores how the impact of gender and family membership faultlines within boards of directors on sustainability-oriented decision making can be amplified by firm values.
