Abstract
This study focuses on the life and works of Isaac van Geelkercken (1615-1672). A first research phase, based upon the study of primary sources resulted predominantly in information about his biography and the corps of his maps and plans. This gave a good starting point for a broader analysis of Van Geelkerckens activities concerning land survey, cartography, urban planning and fortification. Through archive studies, literature reading and the use of methodology (in some cases specially adapted to the specifics of the corpus of Van Geelkerckens works), I was able to give a deeper insight in the documents available. In this study, there is a special focus on graphical elements since this proved to be the main key to the meaning of the documents of Isaac van Geelkercken, besides the mathematical component. This book contains a detailed report of the research project, both in text and image. In this chapter I’ll provide you with a summary and the conclusions from the research.
