Abstract

In this article based on my inaugural address, I will explore how careers can become more sustainable. I first analyze how several developments affecting our work contribute to the way we look at careers today. Then, a total of nine different possible views on careers are presented that might all be valid and viable for our own experience and for practice. After that, I explain how sustainability can be applied to careers and what it means to have a more sustainable career. Based on this, several routes for future research into sustainable careers are presented. This contribution ends with the necessary consequences for an aligning and sustainable HRM policy to be able to realize sustainable careers, in a necessary context of more sustainable business models as well. It is argued that career professionals can play a valuable role in the further developments to create sustainable careers.
