N2 - Despite the growing pressure to retain public sector employees, little is known about the predictive value of individual and organizational determinants of their career sustainability. Using a large data set (N = 37,903), we found that, in general, these employees indicate not to be able and willing to work until their official retirement age. We also found that both individual and organizational determinants influence this ability and willingness, via the mediating mechanism of the distinguished sustainable career indicators. This finding underlines the dual responsibility of the employee and employer to protect the career sustainability of all workers across their lifespan.
