Abstract
Sustainable Human Resource Management (HRM) is an evolving concept, yet developing in
separate conceptual and empirical streams of research. Our systematic literature review
aims to explore the common ground of sustainable HRM by taking stock of its perspectives,
definitions, operationalizations and empirical outcomes across 149 peer-reviewed articles
retrieved from Scopus and EBSCOhost. The analysis points to growing interest in this area,
but reveals a gap in cross-national studies and multi-level research. Nearly half of the studies
(n=70) emphasize economic, social and environmental objectives in their definition of
Sustainable HRM, indicating the prevailing adoption of a triple bottom line (TBL) perspective.
Despite a predominant focus on ability- and motivation-enhancing HRM practices, the
operationalization of Sustainable HRM remains inconsistent. Identified key outcomes include
sustainable firm performance, organizational commitment, and employee’s in-and extra-role
behaviors. Our findings offer a comprehensive synthesis of diverse perspectives in
Sustainable HRM, providing a foundation for future research and conceptual advancement
