This research focused on how organizations can tackle the challenges of agile portfolio management. To answer this question, a literature review was first conducted, followed by a single case study at an organization familiar with agile portfolio management. After the literature review, a total of 19 design principles have been summarized that can contribute to agility within portfolio management. According to the literature, organizations also experience challenges when it comes to agile portfolio management. Both the design principles and challenges were discussed with the organization during the single case study. Through open coding and data-driven categorization, an overview was created that connects the challenges with the design principles. This first of all gives organizations the opportunity to address the challenges by looking at the design principles within their own organization. It also provides opportunities for future research to see, e.g. whether there is an causal relationship between those design principles and specific challenges.
