Abstract
Each day organisations are exposed to operational risks that can cause substantial losses. Business process modelling can be a valuable tool to manage such risks. While BPMN has become the most widely used modelling language, it does not include a standardised visualisation for risk constructs. This research tries to investigate both from a theoretical and practical perspective what extensions can be used to represent risk-related information in BPMN. By reviewing the literature, four extensionswere found which introduce different elements to represent such information. These elements include
text, colour, markers, the reuse of existing symbols, and the introduction of new symbols. With the help of semi-structured interviews, expert modellers were asked about their own experiences with visualising risk constructs and to evaluate the found extensions and their elements.
The outcomes of this research show that expert modellers consider risk (strategies) when modelling a process flow but do not necessarily visualise it. Their opinions on the extensions and their elements vary. Overall, the use of markers and the introduction of a warning sign symbol are best received.
Further research is necessary to confirm these findings with other experts and end-users.
