    Abstract

In regards to a comparative study of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra in relation to the Quran, I am alerted by Prof. Dr. Hanina Ben-Menahem to a new and intriguing direction of research. He observes a striking parallelism between approximately a quarter of the titles from Thus Spoke Zarathustra and the Quran.
Possibly too much to be dismissed as mere coincidence, prompting Ben-Menahem to pose the question: Did the Quran serve as a model for Nietzsche's Zarathustra? This gap in Nietzsche scholarship deserves illumination and has thus been chosen as the subject for this thesis, concluding the Master's degree in Cultural Studies.
The thesis aims to examine whether the Quran, through certain Surahs, served as a substantive source of inspiration for Nietzsche's Zarathustra. Additionally, it explores by close-reading whether there is evidence of appropriation, intertextuality or if the Quran merely provided inspiration to Nietzsche for titling his Zarathustra texts.
This thesis constitutes a scholarly inquiry into a unique research direction that, until now, has remained untouched despite the extensive and growing body of secondary literature.
