Abstract

This research investigates the integration of Responsibility Assignment Matrices (RAMs) into Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) to improve visualization of roles and responsibilities in business process models. Current BPMN standards lack comprehensive support for RAMs, leading to potential discrepancies in resource assignment information. This research focuses on the RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed) framework, exploring methods to effectively visualize RACI-information within BPMN models. Utilizing a design-oriented methodology, in the research a BPMN extension is developed that enriches standard BPMN tasks with RACI elements while maintaining model readability and usability. The new extension aims to improve the semantic quality of business process models, ensuring they reflect real-world processes more accurately. Validation through a case study demonstrates the enhanced clarity and effectiveness of the RACI-enriched models in conveying role-specific responsibilities, going further than just the person carrying out the task. The extension offers significant improvements over traditional BPMN models and existing extensions focusing on integration of RACI into business process models.
