Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

This thesis investigates the transformative impact of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) on social rewards within online gaming communities, set against the backdrop of the rapidly evolving digital ownership landscape. Employing Social Identity Theory (SIT) as a theoretical lens, this thesis explores the intricate ways in which NFT ownership influences players' perceptions and interactions within the gaming environment. The thesis broadly examines how owning digital assets affects social structures in gaming environments.
Key findings reveal a complex relationship between NFT ownership and social dynamics in gaming, such as the creation of exclusive communities, shifts in perceived in-game status and a transformation of the conventional gaming experience. The thesis specifically focuses on how NFTs are changing social rewards in gaming communities by looking at the effects of NFT ownership on player engagement, community interactions, and the gaming economy through the perspective of SIT. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to collect data, testing hypotheses and addressing the main research questions.
This thesis contributes significant insights to academic discussions on digital ownership and offers practical implications for game developers navigating the NFT gaming domain. In conclusion, this thesis underscores the broader implications of NFTs for the future of gaming and suggests avenues for further research in this rapidly developing field.
