Digital transformation is high on the agenda. Not only for commercial organizations but also for the government. The expectations of society are increasing in the field of digitalization of services. Success factors for a digital transformation for municipalities were investigated based on a multiple case study consisting of semi-structured interviews. This study uses Janowski's digital maturity model to categorize municipalities. By testing whether the maturity level and the success factors of the models of Hess, Sebastian and Gimpel have a relationship with each other, success factors could be formulated. The research shows that there appears to be a relationship between the factors organization, data, digital service platform and operational backbone and the digital maturity. The factors digital strategy, value proposition, customer, transformation management and operations seem to lead to a lesser extent to success in digital transformation. Additional success factors were identified during the investigation that could possibly be included in follow-up research.
