Abstract
This study investigates eco-anxiety and examines what participants find helpful in coping with these emotions, as well as the role that active participation in a climate activist group may play in this.Eco-anxiety, characterised by apprehension and emotional distress stemming from environmental concerns, has become increasingly prevalent as the ecological crisis intensifies.
Through qualitative interviews and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), it investigates the implicit and explicit ways in which involvement in such groups can alleviate eco-anxiety. A total of six participants were interviewed, who are members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) in Belgium and the Netherlands. Interviews were conducted face-to-face or via online conference calls, utilising a
semi-structured format to allow for in-depth exploration of participants' experiences. The first round of interviews took place as soon as possible after establishing contact, with a second round occurring 4-5 months later.
The study's findings indicate that active participation in Extinction Rebellion (XR) significantly influences the emotional landscape of individuals experiencing eco-anxiety. Engagement with XR has been shown to transform practical eco-anxiety into action, fostering a sense of empowerment and community among activists. This shift in emotional experience is crucial, as it not only aids in coping with the
distress associated with eco-anxiety but also enhances activists' commitment to environmental advocacy. The practical implications suggest that fostering active involvement in climate activism can be an effective strategy for managing eco-anxiety, contributing to both individual well-being and the broader environmental movement. By providing a supportive community and a platform for action, XR and similar organisations can help mitigate the feelings of helplessness and isolation often associated with eco-anxiety, thereby encouraging sustained engagement with environmental causes.
