Abstract
This study explores the necessary skills and challenges for upskilling Business Intelligence (BI) professionals in the digital age, with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Through qualitative research, including literature review and interviews with BI professionals and managers, it identifies a shift in necessary skills from mostly technical to a blend that includes soft skills, business understanding, and a critical mindset due to AI advancements. To effectively upskill BI professionals, SMEs should develop learning programs that combine theory with practical work, such as project-based learning with real datasets. Emphasizing critical thinking during upskilling initiatives, especially in the context of AI, is crucial. Programs should also cover business knowledge and soft skills. Providing dedicated learning time, consistent support, quality resources, and promoting a learning culture that values continuous improvement and adapts to hybrid learning methods are key strategies for success.
This research offers insights into effective strategies for addressing upskilling challenges and evolving skillsets of future BI professionals, thereby contributing to the broader literature on workforce development in the digital age.
