This research focuses on the importance of service value in ERP implementation projects, as its often overlooked when selecting a software provider. The research aims to understand the value generated by the capabilities of functional consultants in ERP system implementation. This is done with the development of a practical capability map based on VDML. The case organisation, a Dutch firm with 37 years of experience, will be the primary focus of the empirical research, adopting design science research methodology in a single embedded case study. The model is quantitatively evaluated using the Maes & Poels (2007) questionnaire. The resulting capability map displays twenty-nine unique capabilities, highlighting the complexity of the project. The research reveals that implementing an ERP system is complex and not feasible to be handled by a single consultant. Capability mapping provides a clear understanding of the current abilities and areas for improvement. In this respect the capability map should be continuously reviewed to ensure it is adaptable to market changes and the growth of consultants' capabilities. Further research is needed to validate these findings, as well as extend this research to project managers, program management and customer since the functional consultant is not solely responsible for ERP implementations.
